Mangaluru: Three members of a family, including a woman and two minor girls, were killed and three others injured after a rain-triggered landslide crushed a house in the Nagori locality of Mangaluru early Wednesday.
The incident occurred behind the Kankanady Police Station after continuous heavy rain triggered a landslide on a nearby hill. A large amount of mud and debris along with a retaining wall collapsed onto a tiled house, trapping six members of a family inside۔

Residents immediately alerted the authorities, following which personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, Police, SDRF and NDRF launched a rescue operation.
After several hours of rescue efforts, all six occupants were pulled out of the debris. However, a woman and two minor girls had succumbed to their injuries before they could be rescued. Three others, including the head of the family and two girls, were rescued alive and shifted to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Shanta (46), Anamika Chaurasia (8) and Pari (4). The injured are Balakrishna (48), Alka (14) and Anusha (11).
The family originally hails from Bihar and had been residing in Mangaluru for nearly two decades.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. visited the accident site and reviewed the rescue operation. Officials later confirmed that the operation had been completed after ensuring that no one else was trapped under the debris.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Health Minister and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge U.T. Khader cut short his visit to Delhi and decided to return to Mangaluru in the wake of the incident. He directed the district administration to ensure that the full cost of treatment for the injured is borne by the government and that immediate compensation is provided to the bereaved family.
Heavy rain continued to lash coastal Karnataka on Wednesday. The district administration has advised people living near hillsides and landslide-prone areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
