Karwar: In a significant step towards tuberculosis (TB) eradication, the Government of India has launched a nationwide programme to administer the Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine to adults, with the aim of enhancing immunity and reducing TB transmission in the community.
Under this initiative, adult BCG vaccination is being rolled out in 274 districts across the country, including 16 districts in Karnataka. As part of the second phase in Karnataka, Uttara Kannada district has begun implementing the programme, with 22,148 beneficiaries vaccinated so far.
Health authorities said the vaccine is targeted at high-risk groups, including individuals over 18 who have previously undergone TB treatment, those in close contact with TB patients, people with diabetes, tobacco users, individuals with low body mass index (BMI) indicating malnutrition, and senior citizens above 60 years of age. These groups are considered more vulnerable to contracting and spreading TB.
Medical experts noted that administering the BCG vaccine to adults strengthens immunity and provides protection against TB for the next 10–18 years. To promote the campaign, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Dilish Shashi will receive the adult BCG vaccine at the Baitkhol Urban Primary Health Centre in Karwar on August 13, setting an example for the public.
