Thackeray cousins unite after 20 years for Marathi language rally in Mumbai

Mumbai: After two decades of separation, Thackeray cousins Uddhav and Raj are set to share the stage on July 5 in Mumbai to oppose the inclusion of Hindi as a third language in Maharashtra’s primary schools. The joint rally marks a significant moment in state politics, with leaders calling it a turning point for the cause of Marathi manoos.

The event, backed by the Maha Vikas Aghadi, will see participation from students, teachers, writers, artists, sportspersons, and political leaders, and is being dubbed "Samyukta Maharashtra Movement 2.0". The decision to hold a single unified rally came after coordination between Uddhav aide Sanjay Raut and Raj’s team, to avoid multiple events on the same issue. July 5, a Saturday, was chosen to ensure attendance from students and parents, while avoiding religious and workday clashes.

The protest is a response to a state government order in April, which made Hindi mandatory for Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools. Following public backlash, the government amended the rule to say Hindi would "generally" be the third language, with schools allowed to offer alternatives if 20 students per class opt for another Indian language.

Both parties clarified that the rally will be non-political, with no party flags, and focused solely on protecting Marathi language and culture. The venue and time are yet to be finalized.

Meanwhile, their maternal uncle Chandrakant Vaidya welcomed the reunion, calling it a moment long awaited by Maharashtra. Acknowledging the emotional significance, he extended his blessings but refrained from commenting on any possible political alliance.

In response, BJP leaders asserted that Marathi remains compulsory in Maharashtra and accused the Thackerays of creating confusion. State Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar and Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant defended the government’s stance, highlighting BJP’s efforts in promoting Marathi, including granting it classical language status.
