Hubballi: It is a sweet and sour experience for people this week.
On one hand the price of tomato is decreasing, and on the other the prices of tur dal and onion are moving upwardly. Tomato which was sold at ` 80 till recently, is sold at ` 25 now. Tur dal price which was stagnant at ` 120 till now has gone up to ` 130.
The inflow of tomato has steadly increasing as the stock from Jaipur is arriving at the APMC here. More inflow of better quality tomato has brought down the pretty vegetable's price. People who were hesitant to use tomato in cocking because of its price, can now generously use it.
Tur dal
The price of tur dal is slowly going up. Now, the price has gone up by ` 10. It was sold at ` 120 earlier and now sold at ` 130. "More people were seen purchasing tur dal thinking that the price may further go up," said trader Basavaraj.
Some people use 'Chennangi' and chickpea as a substitute to tur dal. But, the prices of Chennangi and chickpea have also gone up, upsetting the common people. A section of people are very particular about quality and therefore use tur dal even by paying a higher price. But it is the people from middle class and poor who are suffering due to increase in tur dal price.
Prices of green dal has increased from ` 110 to ` 120, Chennangi dal from ` 98 to ` 120. However, sugar price has remained static.
Decrease in the prices of vegetables has brought smile on the face of vegetarians. Prices of Kotambari, and other vegetables have come down. Pudina, Palak, Karibevu, Shunti, and Bellulli prices have remained stagnant.
The king of fruits mango has vanished form the market. Clustered apple has entered now. Last week, jackfruits was ruling the roost. This week, it is clustered apple. It is sold at ` 80 to ` 90 per kg. Pomegranate which was sold at ` 200 last week is sold at ` 80 now. Prices of apple, mosumbi, and orange have also come down.
Rebate
Till recently, tur dal was sold in 50 kg bags at APMC.
But now, people can go to APMC and buy tur dal even in 2 kg bags at the wholesale price. The government has started retail selling of tur dal at all the APMCs in the State.
