Karwar: As part of the observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Karwar Police organized a public awareness program on Thursday at the Police Welfare Hall to educate citizens, especially the youth, about the dangers of drug abuse.
Speaking on the occasion, Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Narayan M. said the Karnataka Police Department is observing the day across the state under the slogan "Say Yes to Life, Say No to Drugs." He emphasized that making Karnataka a drug-free state is a goal supported by the Chief Minister, but achieving it is not possible by the police alone. “Every individual must come forward and contribute to the fight against drugs,” he urged.
Dr. Vijayaraj, Head of the Psychiatry Department at Karwar's KIMS Hospital, addressed the psychological vulnerability of youth. He explained that due to the easy availability of drugs, teenagers as young as sixteen are increasingly getting addicted. “Once someone becomes dependent on drugs, it is extremely difficult to recover. Addiction leads to both mental and physical health issues,” he said, warning youth not to fall prey to drugs or even to social media addiction, which can also derail life goals.
Renowned actress and Mahanati Runner-up Award winner Shwetha Bhatt administered the anti-drug pledge. She called upon everyone to join hands in creating a drug-free society. “Nobody should consume drugs for passion or momentary pleasure, nor should they encourage others to do so. People must be made aware of the harmful consequences of drug use,” she said.
Competitions were held to promote awareness about drug abuse, and certificates of appreciation were distributed to the winners.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Sajid Mulla, Additional SPs Jagadeesh M and Krishnamurthy, Dr. Mahalakshmi B.K. from the Forensic Medicine Department, officials from the Police and Excise Departments, NCORD Committee members, students, and other dignitaries were present.
Prior to the formal program, an awareness rally was held with the participation of students and the general public. The rally commenced from Shivaji High School and the Karwar Bus Stand and concluded at the Police Welfare Hall.
