Karwar: After several days of heavy rainfall in the coastal taluks of Uttara Kannada district, the monsoon showers have now intensified in the ghat (Malnad) taluks. In response to the Orange Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Uttara Kannada (UK) Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmi Priya has declared a one-day holiday on June 25, 2025, for all Anganwadis, primary, and high schools in Yellapur, Haliyal, Joida, and Dandeli taluks.
These four taluks, located in the Western Ghats region, are known for their hilly terrain and dense forests, making them particularly vulnerable during periods of intense rainfall. The precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of children amid the risk of flooding, landslides, and other rain-related hazards.
The circular was issued under the authority granted by Section 34(m) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and also references oral requests from the respective tahsildars of the affected taluks. The IMD has forecast continuous heavy rain from June 24 to June 27, prompting the district administration to act swiftly.
The Deputy Commissioner has directed the Deputy Directors of the Women and Child Welfare Department (Karwar) and the Department of Public Instruction (Sirsi) to implement the holiday order strictly. They are also advised to compensate for the missed academic day in due course.
As monsoon activity intensifies across Uttara Kannada, the district administration continues to monitor both coastal and ghat taluks closely, urging residents and institutions to take necessary precautions.
