Doha: An Israeli attack on Hamas officials in Qatar’s capital, Doha, has triggered widespread condemnation, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres denouncing it as a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty. Israel confirmed the strike, the first of its kind on Qatari soil, even as Doha has played a key role in mediating ceasefire talks and hosts the U.S. Al Udeid airbase.
According to media reports, Qatar’s foreign ministry condemned the “cowardly attack”, while global outrage poured in swiftly. Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Sudan, Egypt, Algeria, Oman, Mauritania, Libya, and Yemen’s Houthis all strongly denounced the strike as a breach of sovereignty, international law, and regional security, affirming solidarity with Qatar. The Maldives, Pakistan, and Palestine (including Hamas and Islamic Jihad) described it as a heinous crime, while the GCC pledged united support. Western powers also voiced alarm: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Spain, and the EU condemned the attack, warning against escalation. The U.S. expressed regret, with President Trump assuring Qatar it would not happen again, though reiterating Israel acted independently. Kazakhstan also called the attack unacceptable.
Many nations, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, warned the bombing risks dragging the Middle East into further conflict. Leaders from across the Arab and Muslim world, along with Europe and the UN, urged restraint and renewed calls for a Gaza ceasefire, warning that Israel’s actions threatened to destabilize the entire region.
