Bhatkal: In a tragic incident, a 10th-grade student of New English School drowned in a lake on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Shashidhar Yogesh Moger (15), a resident of Venkatapur, Bhatkal. Although it was a holiday for the school, it is said that teachers had arranged a special class for Class 10 students.
After the class ended around 12:45 p.m., Shashidhar, along with a few of his friends, had lunch and then went to Zamarmatta Lake near Asarkeri for fishing. It is said that he had gone to the lake with five friends. During this time, Shashidhar accidentally slipped and fell into the lake, and drowned in the water, leading to his death. It is also learnt that one of his friends made several attempts to rescue him but could not save him. Reports said that the deceased did not know swimming well, which prevented him from coming out of the water.
Upon receiving the information, DySP Mahesh K. visited the spot along with a police team and conducted an inspection.
The body has been sent to Bhatkal Government Hospital for post-mortem, and a case has been registered at Bhatkal Town Police Station.
