Belagavi: Two tragic drowning incidents were reported in Belagavi district during Ganesh idol immersion on Saturday, claiming the lives of two young men.

In the first incident, Rahul Byakwadkar (33), a resident of Vadadwadi in Belagavi city, slipped into the water at Jakkery pond during idol immersion. Though companions pulled him out and rushed him to a hospital, he died on the way. A case has been registered at Tilakwadi Police Station.

In another incident in Khanapur taluk, Shubham Kuppatgeri (22), a resident of Yadoga village, was swept away in the Malaprabha river near the Yadoga–Chapagaon bridge while returning after idol immersion. Search operations by SDRF personnel are under way to recover his body. The case has been registered under the jurisdiction of Nandgad Police Station.

Police have confirmed both incidents and said investigations are in progress.
