23 killed, over 50 injured as massive fire engulfs Goa nightclub; Cylinder blast suspected

Bhatkal: At least 23 people were killed and more than 50 others injured after a massive and devastating fire broke out at a nightclub in Arpora, North Goa. The incident occurred at around 1 AM when the club was preparing to close for the night. Arpora is a leafy inland locality situated around 100 km from Karwar, a border town of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka.

According to sources, a large number of staff members and other individuals were still inside when the fire erupted, resulting in one of the deadliest fire tragedies in recent years in Goa's nightlife hubs.

Sources, citing the Fire Brigade and local authorities, said the blaze is suspected to have started near the kitchen area, possibly due to a gas cylinder explosion. Initial reports indicate that the explosion was extremely powerful, causing flames to engulf the entire building within seconds and leaving occupants with little time to escape.

Eyewitnesses said the fire spread so rapidly that thick smoke and flames swept across the dance floor and other sections of the club. Many people were trapped in narrow passages, making evacuation extremely difficult.

Police and emergency teams have confirmed that only three to four of the deceased were tourists, while the remaining victims—nearly 19 or more—were staff members who were engaged in winding up operations at the time of the incident.

All bodies have been shifted to Goa Medical College for post-mortem, and several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Local residents have alleged delays in rescue operations, claiming that fire tenders took considerable time to bring the blaze under control. Videos circulating online show that emergency exits inside the building were reportedly inadequate and failed to support timely evacuation.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site soon after the tragedy and termed the incident “deeply unfortunate.” He ordered a magistrate-level inquiry and assured strict action against anyone found responsible, stating, “Violations of fire safety norms will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and announced ₹2 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Early investigations indicate that the nightclub had previously faced complaints regarding structural irregularities, fire safety violations, and licensing issues. Police have already detained the club manager, while legal action against the owners is expected soon.

Authorities are also examining whether the building had proper fire alarms, sprinklers, and adequate emergency exits, and whether negligence played a role in the high casualty figure.
