Karwar: Deputy commissioner Ujwal Kumar Ghosh participated in the cleanliness drive organized by Pahare Vedige at the city bus stand on Saturday.

The vedige has decided to clean various wards in Karwar city every Saturday and on the first day of the program they cleaned the bus stand.

Assistant commissioner S P Prashanthkumar, Pahare Vedike president Nagraj Nayak, city municipal council president Leelabai Thanekar, vice president Chaya Javkar and others also took part in the cleanliness drive.

Mundgod: Farmer ends life

Mundgod: Ganapati Laxman Nimbai (40), a farmer of Tumbaragi village in Mundgod taluk, committed suicide by consuming poison in his home on Friday. He was in distress as he was unable to repay the loans taken by his father. He is survived by his wife and three children. Mundgod police have registered the case.

Karwar MLA Sail inaugurates Karate championship

KARWAR: "Along with educating children formally, there is need to increase their physical strength by teaching them sports like Karate" , opined MLA Satish Sail.

Speaking after inaugurating the All India Open Karate Championship at Kris hall at Sadashivgad Karwar taluk on Saturday, he said that each one of us must practice exercises regularly to keep ourselves fit.

Uttara Kannada Karate Association head SP Hande said that Karate basically hails from India. This martial arts which took birth in Kerala is coming back to India in new forms through Buddhists. Karate, Yoga and Bharatnatyam help in controlling mind and body.

Taluk Panchayat Members Arati Banavalikar, City Municipal Council Member Devidas Naik, Datta Desai, Principal Mahesh Golikatti, Chittakul police Sub Inspector Govind B M, Sunil Igal and others were present.

Taluk-level karavali utsav in Haliyal on Jan 13

Haliyal: The taluk-level karavali utsav will be held in Haliyal on January 13. In wake of this celebration, a preparatory meeting was held at the Pattan panchayat hall on Saturday. MLC S L Ghotnekar presided over the meeting which discussed about cultural programs and competitions to be organised during the utsav.

Agriculture and animal fair will be held in Shivaji pre-university college ground on January 12 form 9:00 am. Rangoli competition will be held at Carmel higher school on January 12. Apart from this, wrestling contest will be held in the wrestling field.

On January 13 at 7:00 am, marathon will be held under the aegis of police department and Lions club. A blood donation camp will be held at the community health centre. On the same day, drawing competition will be held for primary school students at Carmel higher primary school and for secondary school students at Nisarga vana in Maradigudda. At 2:00 pm, program on 'fuel-free cooking' will be held at the Pattan panchayat hall. At 5:00 pm, cultural programs will be held at Shivaji stadium. At 6:30 pm, Ekakavya award winner Raghavendra Anvekar will inaugurate the program and at 7:30 pm cultural programs will be held.

At 9:30 pm, musician Raghu Dixit and troupe from Bengaluru will present concert.
