Karwar: A survey carried out by the District Information Office in Majali, Mudgeri, Chitakula and Hosali villages, located on Goa border a week ago, has revealed that student strength in Kannada medium schools in these villages had increased significantly over they years.

These villages are dominated by Konkani-Marathi culture. It was not too long ago that the villagers preferred either Marathi or English medium schools for their children.

But the trend has changed now, observes Rajiv Nayak, the Block Education Officer.

For instance, many children from Hosali village, who had been studying in English medium schools at Sadashivgad a few years ago, had returned to Kannada medium school in the village now.

Sadia Moinuddin, who studied upto fifth standard in an English medium school in Pune, joined Kannada medium school at Hosali for sixth standard.

The student strength in Mudgeri government primary schools has increased to 70 this year. Average strength of students used to be forty in previous years.

In fisheries village of Devbag and in Chitakula Rehabilitation Colony of Seabird naval project displaced families, only Kannada medium schools are functioning now.

Marathi medium schools are almost closed in these villages. Various educational programmes promoting Kannada medium schools seem to have helped in popularizing Kannada language in border villages, it is observed.
