MUSCAT: Academic excellence awards, release of pocket telephone directory, tribute to late Syed Abdurrahim Irshad, skits, comedy show and fantastic food arrangements marked the Bhatkal Muslim Jamat-Muscat Eid Milan 2012 held here at Indian School, Al Ghubra.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest of the evening, J. S. Mukul, ambassador of India to Oman, said that Eid Al Azha is a great festival and we take pride in joining the festivities. The ambassador honoured four Oman-based students from Bhatkal who obtained 80 per cent and above marks in final examinations in Xth and one student at graduate level. Those honoured included: SHEEMA FARHA DAMDA (CGPA score: 10); SYED AHMED JASEEM (9.2); QUAISER AHMED SAWKOOR (8.8); MOHAMMED RAYIF MOHTESHAM (8.4); and FATIMA ZIKRA (BE in Biotechnology 8.2). Aftab H. Kola, convenor, BMJ-Muscat education committee and senior vice-president of the Jamat, conducted the Academic excellence awards session. Mohammed Ghouse Khalifa, secretary-general, Bhatkal Muslim Khaleej Council, was the guest of honour.



The Oman-based Bhatkal community pocket telephone directory was released on the occasion by the guests. Qamar Merchant, vice-president second, and directory convenor, conducted the directory release session.
Earlier, Salim Sada, president, BMJ-Muscat, welcomed while Moazzam Sada recited qiraat with translation done by Hayyan Nisar MJ.
The entertainment segment began with Ya Tayyiba, an Arabic song directed by Dr. Waseema Ayub Siddibapa.
Directed by Aftab Kola, the song-based presentation, ‘A tribute to Syed Abdurrahim Irshad’ evoked nostalgic memories of olden days of Bhatkal. Syed Sibtain Zia read out the three classic songs penned by his grandfather, Syed Abdurrahim Irshad: Latan, Pang bahar padlo wahraitacho ge and Bhatkalchi sarzameen pala Tumka Apavta. As the songs were read out scenes were created on stage.
Skits, Muscat Jamat’s speciality, included Muscat Watha Ge Mey directed by Mrs Faiza Nisar MJ; Hum Sab Ek Hain, directed by Mrs Salma Hafeez Ruknuddin; Miswak Aur Wudhu ki Ehmiath directed by Mrs Niamath Lowna Abubaker; Sawal Pe Sawal directed by Mrs Tazeem Suhail Ekkeri; and Judwa bhai directed by Niamath Lowna Abubaker.
Habeeb Qadeer and Mirza Khairuddin Baig, well-known comedians from Hyderabad, regaled the audience.
Raffle included two bikes, netbook, umra ticket, and a number of electronic and consumer items. The Raffle was conducted by Lowna Abubaker, Husain Barmavar, Nisar MJ, Riyaz Merchant and Ayub Siddibapa. Suhail Ekkeri, convenor, Eid Milan Committee, proposed a vote of thanks. Aftab Kola and Qamar Merchant compered the programme. Around 700 people attended the event which concluded at 1am.
