Navsari (Guj): At least 87 people fell ill after drinking contaminated water in Mithala Nagri extension area here today, health officials said.

The victims complained of nausea, vomitting, and diarrhoea after drinking the water, they said. Eleven persons with symptoms of acute gastro, were admitted to local Civil hospital, officials said adding that they a survey had been conducted in the locality, following a number of complaints of this nature.

"Around 87 patients, with complaints of nausea, diarrhoea and vomitting were examined today. Out of them, 60 suffered from minor problems, while 11 persons were admitted to district civil hospital," District Surveillance Officer Dr M R Deriwala said.

The Mithala Nagri extension area, from where, these cases have been reported, is flood-prone and drinking water pipelines there incidentally pass through the main drainage, he said.

According to a local person, the drinking water pipeline pass through main sewer line and sometimes due to leakage the water gets contaminated.

A similar incident had been taken place in the same locality two years back, in which, 50 people had fallen ill, he added.
