Garbage in Bangalore

Bangalore: The two-week old garbage problem in this tech hub which is yet to be fully resolved has the trade affecting up to 30 per cent of business in the commercial areas of Chikpet, Avenue Road and K R Market in the city, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) President K Shiva Shanmugam today said.

'The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has failed to initiate steps to convert waste into energy and it also lacks transparency and corruption is rampant,' he said while speaking to reporters here.

Inadequate performance by the BBMP and other local agencies like BWSSB, BSNL, Traffic Police, BMTC, BMRCL, BESCOM and BDA were responsible for unorganised growth of the city which was termed as Silicon Valley of India, tech hub, Knowledge hub, centre for health tourism, he said, adding, 'But today it is titled as a Garbage City.'

He said besides the garbage problem, which has assumed dangerous proportions, the people of the city also faced problems like bad roads, unscientific road humps, bad quality of buildings under construction, aged trees, defective street light and so on.
