Udupi: Four persons were killed and five injured in a collision between a Tata Sumo and a lorry carrying gas cylinders on National Highway 66 at Yermal village near Padubidri in Udupi district on Monday.
Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah confirmed that one person died on the spot. Three travelling by the Tata Sumo, who sustained severe injuries, died on the way to hospital.


The dead have been identified as Shaji (42), Vijayan (53), Shanthi, and Jayanti.
The injured were identified as Shaji’s wife Lalitha (40), daughter Arunina (14), Shanta’s son Nandu (11), Jayanti’s son Kannan (12) and Babu (45).
Five persons in the Tata Sumo have been taken to two private hospitals: four to A.J. Hospital in Mangalore, and one to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal.
He said that according to eyewitness accounts given to the Padubidri police, the Tata Sumo was going from Kollur to Mangalore, while the lorry was going in the opposite direction, from Mangalore to Udupi.
Padubidri police have registered a case.
