Karwar: Hundreds of students took out a protest rally in Karwar under the banner of District Students’ Federation, demanding the government to set up the proposed medical college in Karwar.
Starting from Maladevi ground, the rally went through all the main streets of the city and terminated at the office premises of Deputy Commissioner. The students continuously shouted slogans demanding for the opening up of medical college in Karwar.
Addressing the students, advocate K R Desai informed that 23 acres of land has been made available beside the District Civil Hospital with a pre-plan of setting the medical college on the land. Major projects, such as the Kadmba Naval Base, Kaiga Atomic Power Station and hydro power projects have been working in the vicinity of Karwar. ‘No facility has been made available to medical service in the event of any major disaster’, he added.
‘The first medical college in Uttara Kannada district should come up in the district headquarters Karwar’, he demanded.
Journalist T B Harikant said that the stir demanding medical college in Karwar is getting intensified from the last couple of days. Joining of students added new strength to the agitation, he opined.
Mr. George Fernandes of the Medical College Agitation Committee said, the medical college should be established in Karwar and the committee would further intensify its agitation with the support of the students to get the demand fulfilled.
Ravindra Amadalli and District Students’ Federation President Raghu Naik also spoke on the occasion.
Mohan Bolshettar, Ramesh Gowda and others were present.
