Karwar: Organisation of Karnataka Christian Association (OKCA) demanded that the post of the Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat president be given to a Christian candidate.
George Fernandes, honorary president of the association, told press persons that Christians had not got the post since the zilla panchayat came into being in the district. He said Albert D’Costa had been elected from Mavalli zilla panchayat constituency in Bhatkal with a margin of 2,400 votes during the last election.
Simon Johnson D’Souza, president of the association, said the office-bearers of the association would submit a memorandum to R.V. Deshpande, former Minister, in this regard. He said Christians had traditionally been supporting the Congress and hoped that Mr. Deshpande would help Mr. Albert get elected as the zilla panchayat president.
