Kumta: Thieves made away with around Rs 2 lakh from the hundis kept in Mahabaleshwar temple at Gokarna in Kumta taluk on Friday night. The incident came to light on Saturday morning.


Thieves entered into the temple by breaking grills of main door and broke open town hundis kept in the temple. Interestingly, the thieves have not touched currencies of Rs 50, 20, 10 denomination and currencies. They have picked only the currencies of high denomination like Rs 500, 1000, state Temple Management Board Secretary G K Hegde in a complaint filed with the police.
It may be mentioned here that, there is a police out post near the temple and security personnel would be guarding the temple round the clock. CCTV camera had been disconnected, sources said.
Superintendent of Police K T Balkrishna said, the police have inspected the spot with dog squad. There was possibility of involvement of insiders in the incident, he stated.
