Karwar: There was an urgent need for creating awareness about misuse of drugs, particularly among children and youth, opined Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer V S Hegde.

He was speaking after inaugurating the World Anti drugs Day programme in the Taluk Hospital premises in Siddapur recently. Many anti-social elements were engaged in smuggling of drugs. Large numbers of youth, particularly in urban areas, have been falling prey to drugs. Therefore, steps should be taken to create awareness among the mass about possible health hazards due to consumption of drugs, he stated.


Tahsildar Ganapati Kattinakere, Taluk Health Officer Lakshmikant Naik, and Health Officer Balachandra Mesta spoke on the occasion.

CPI Halamurthyrao, Physical Education Superintendent S G Hegde, Women & Welfare Officer Padmavati and others were present.

Health Education Officer R V Madiwal compared the programme. A rally was taken out through the main thoroughfares of the two not create awareness among the public.

Theft in temple
Sirsi: Burglars have taken away ornaments on Kalikamba deity worth Rs. 20,000 by breaking open the doors of Kalikamba temple at Ambagiri in Gandhinagar in Sirsi town in the early hours of Wednesday.

Circle Inspector of Police Nagesh Shetty and Police Sub Inspector Yadagudi have visited the spot. A case has been registered.
