Bhatkal: The government of Karnataka has recommended Bhatkal TMC for the proposed 'Best Municipality' award, notified the Bhatkal Town Municipal Corporation president, Mr. Parvez Kashimji. This award will be given in the International Conference and an Exhibition on Municipal Services, urban Development, Public Works (Icon SWM 2009), he added.
Mr. Kashimji was addressing the press reporters in a press conference. He averred that the Bhatkal TMC was one among the two TMC's across the state which has been recommended for the award. He opined that the Bhatkal TMC has completed most of the development works in the town; these include the roads, drainage system, street lights and drinking water supply under its jurisdiction. Delighted with the news of the recommendation, Mr. Kashimji affirmed that this is the achievement resulted from the combined efforts of all the people in the town.
The state government has taken an account of the overall development in the town before recommending the Bhatkal TMC for the award. There are a total of 240 TMC's and eight City Corporation across the state. Shiruguppa TMC in Bellary District is the second TMC that has been recommended. The city corporations of Mangalore and Mysore have been selected and recommended for the award.
Icon SWM 2009 (International Conference and Exhibition on Municipal Services, Urban Development, and Public Works), is the first of its kind conference. It is being organized by the Centre for Quality Management System, Jadavpur University, in collaboration with various departments, boards and authorities of the government of India. The conference will be held on November 3, 2009.
The conference is being organized with the support of various international organizations, agencies and universities including Air & Waste Management Association, USA, Aston University, UK, Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Eco Australia Global, Australia, University of Kalmar, Sweden, Indo German Chamber of Commerce etc. Apart from these, various national organization and institutes are also supporting them.
The citizens of the town are proud of the recommendation and it is announced that the conference will be held in Kolkata. Mr. Kashimji informed that the TMC chief officer Mr. Krishnappa and Sanitary officer Anil Prabhu will accompany him to the Icon SWM award function. The awarded will be conferred to the one TMC of India. In this regard, the officers of the recommended TMC's will present their Presentations. It may also be noted that Bhatkal TMC has been qualified in the first round of the excellence in the SWM (Sewage Waste Management) and is one of the twelve ULB ( Urban Local bodies) selected in the list.
We are delighted by the news of award recommendation by Government of Karnataka. One may observe the recent development work at Bhatkal, which should have been completed last year itself. Still much has to be done at our place but I think more attention has been given for decoration of TMC office. The readers might have gone through the news in Sahilonline with regard to road conditions and garbage stock at different places with photos. In rainy season the conditions were even worst and the scene at Shamsuddin Circle attracted the eyes of outsiders. Any way if the presentation at Kolkata Conference is good, then I hope chances of reaching the award are more.
